The Good Samaritan was identified on Saturday as 27-year-old Christoph Murray.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Kronister said his agent received a desperate 911 call from Murray’s girlfriend when the three were swept away in the Apollo Beach Nature Reserve in Tampa Bay.
The father and toddler, believed to be about three years old, did not survive. Their bodies were recovered around 9 pm on Friday.
As of Saturday morning, the crew has not yet found Murray.
“I couldn’t thank him any more for his heroic actions. Unfortunately, the flow was so strong that he couldn’t attempt a rescue operation, either as good or pure as he intended,” Chronister said. Said.
Several agencies are involved in the search, including the Hillsborough County Security Office, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Team, Coast Guard, Tampa Police, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.
Sheriff Kronister said the tragedy served as an important reminder for families heading to the beach in the summer.
If there is an area that is clearly marked as “no swimming”, there is a reason. I ask all the parents there. Do not place your toddler near moving or open waters without wearing a life jacket, “Cronister warned.
