A new study found that oysters caught along the Florida coastline contained toxic chemicals. This includes the Tampa Bay area here.
Florida International University reports that oysters in Biscayne Bay, Marco Island, and Tampa Bay contained serious contaminants. In this study, 156 oysters were sampled from these areas.
According to this study, all oysters were tested positive for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) and phthalates (PAE). They are considered “eternal chemicals”, which proves they are entering our food supply.
“I wanted to find out what we were eating and if it could be contaminated. We,” Said Leila Remos, The lead author of the study and a prominent postdoctoral fellow at FIU. “These findings are definitely a danger signal, especially for areas like Biscayne Bay.”
Studies show that eating oysters currently has a low health risk, but once pollutants get into drinking water, it can be a bigger problem.
