Kansas City, Missouri — A busy holiday season for local food banks and community kitchens.
Organizations have been hit harder by supply chain issues with certain items, and many say food needs are high again this year.
Sara Bills, director of Harvesters Communications, said food bank volunteers are working tirelessly to keep up with high demand.
“Returning to 2019, we’re getting about £ 1,000,000 more a month this fall than before the pandemic,” Biles said.
According to Biles, the organization hasn’t reached the required levels like it did last year, but the Kansas City Metro still has a lot of food-deficient families.
Biles said supply chain issues were thankfully not damaging the organization so much.
“Some small items we couldn’t get right away, but generally speaking, there are some great vendors we work with and we have the food we need. I was able to get it, “she said.
Throughout the town of Nourish KC, a community kitchen for those in need, supply chain issues have struggled to get plastic bottles and takeaway materials.
Executive Director Sue Fenceke said one vendor cites driver shortages as a problem.
“We actually had a long-term relationship with the food vendor who called us one day and said they wouldn’t deliver the order today and wouldn’t accept it for the time being,” Fenceke said. I am. ..
But thanks to the support of the community, she said the kitchen didn’t have to turn anyone back.
For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Nourish KC will open a dining room with 50% capacity in time for Thanksgiving.
