According to experts, wildfires have intensified due to social decisions
Portland, Oregon (KOIN) —Oregon State University experts said all Oregon citizens are involved in forest management — and we need to learn to live with wildfires.
Wildfires, like tsunamis and earthquakes, are inevitable, experts say. But what we can do is decide what will happen next.
James Johnston is a researcher at OSU’s Forestry University. As a society, he said, we decided to eliminate fire from forests designed to burn. Forestry experts said the decision would build up fuel and exacerbate future wildfires.
According to Johnston, human behavior enriches the atmosphere with carbon dioxide (CO2), which locks us into a hotter, drier future.
“We have made the decision to start a forest fire, and we cannot regain that decision,” he said. “Now our challenge is to learn to live with fire.”
Johnston said we live in some of the countries we intended to burn — the difference is the severity.
The decision we make now is whether to manage the forest, reduce its density and remove surface fuel by burning.
Johnston added that Oregon citizens need to begin making wise legislative decisions on forest management.
