Denver (AP) — Former Colorado Governor Richard “Dick” Lamm has died, despite the 1976 Winter Olympics being awarded to the state. He was 85 years old.

His wife said in a statement Friday that Lamb died of pulmonary embolism complications later this Thursday.

Lamb served as governor for three terms from 1975 to 1987. As a state councilor, he argued that he campaigned against hosting the game in 1976, damaging the environment and incurring unnecessary costs to the state. The tournament has moved to Innsbruck, Austria.

Ram was also a presidential candidate for the Reform Party, which was unsuccessful in 1996.
