NS. LOUIS COUNTY — A former assistant teacher at Florissant Elementary School was charged Thursday in 2013 for sexually abusing a child.
Joseph Gaia, 32, in Hazelwood’s Queen Undrive, 500 blocks, was charged with two counts of legal sodomy for children under the age of 12 and one count of child sexual abuse.
Gaia was accused of having sexual contact with a child under the age of 12 between May 2013 and May 2017. At that time, Gaia was an assistant at Wedgwood Elementary School in Florissant.
The judge set Gaia’s bail at $ 50,000.
Gaia was last hired by the school district in January 2020, according to a news release from the Ferguson Florisant school district. The district said the criminal record in Gaile’s criminal record survey had not surfaced.
“The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority,” said the district release.
None of the lawyers were listed in Gaia’s court documents.
