Florida officials have arrested former Miami University football player Rashawn Jones in connection with the 2006 deadly shooting of his teammate Bryan Pata.

According to US Marshal Service Press release, Jones, 35, was arrested Thursday in Okara on a murder warrant obtained by the Miami-Dade Police Department on Tuesday.

According to a press release, 22-year-old Pata was shot dead on the night of November 7, 2006, outside his apartment in Kendall, Florida, after returning home from soccer practice.

NS Associated Press Pata reported that he was expected to be selected early in the 2007 NFL draft.

With AP ESPN Pata has long been suspected of shooting, and witnesses reported that Jones and Pata had discussed several times before the shooting.

Witnesses said Pata beat Jones during a physical quarrel, officials said.

Pata’s brother told investigators that Jones threatened to shoot Pata two months before the killing.

The detective interviewed Jones twice after the shooting, stating that he was at home and never left Pata’s death night, but investigators said Jones’ cell phone was near Pata’s apartment on the night of the shooting. I found that I rang the cell tower.

ESPN reported that witnesses in the shooting area chose Jones from their photo lineup in 2007 and 2020.

According to ESPN, Jones’ arrest will take place during the week of Pata’s 37th birthday.

Jones is currently in Marion County and is waiting to be handed over to Miami-Dade.
