Olathe, Kansas — With the exception of Olathe’s native and her sister, few can be said to have won the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Kavya Shivashankar won in 2009 and Vanya Shivashankar won in 2015.

Father and coach Mirle Shivashankar said training at the annual event is not memorable.

“There are several patterns in words that come from Italian, or from French to English. Therefore, on one side you understand those patterns. On the other side, it is Greek or Understand if the words have Latin roots. What are they? Roots? Roots are contained in many English words, so I understand the meaning of those roots. ” Told.

2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee It will start on Saturday, June 12th.

Prior to the event, Cavia explained the strategies that contributed to the 2009 victory.

“Writing a word in the palm helped me visualize it. I had an accident in the past writing a letter, but it didn’t mean that and you couldn’t go back.” Said Cavia. “It was really helpful to be able to follow the letters and visualize the words, and the second thing was trying to understand the question I wanted to ask next.”

While the whole world is watching, Cavia said her strategy for managing momentary pressure involves eliminating distractions.

“I really adjusted everything else,” she remembers. “I saw a panel of sounders, quasi-sounders, and judges.”

This year’s event looks different than last year. For the first time, Spelling Bee will be a virtual and face-to-face hybrid competition.

Kavya states that the contest provides an opportunity for like-minded young people to connect.

However, she added that this change is a benefit for some and can be a disadvantage for others.

“I think it really helps the strengths of individual spellers and the experience they get from it,” Kavia said. “I’m confident that the collaboration environment has only increased because it’s virtualized.”

Kavya added that the collaborative environment is one that exists when she competes and establishes relationships that will last for years.
