Miami (AP) — A former NFL wide receiver from South Florida pleaded guilty to stealing his identity in California to fraudulently obtain coronavirus-related unemployment insurance benefits.

According to court records, Kembrell Almod Tompkins, 33, pleaded guilty to a federal court in Miami on Monday for one fraudulent access device fraud and one exacerbation of personal information theft. He faces up to 12 years in prison in his planned January 6 sentence.

According to a judicial transaction, Tompkins used the stolen identities of a number of Florida residents to obtain fraudulent unemployment insurance benefits from California. The state of California distributed these unemployment allowance funds as debit cards and mailed them to addresses related to Thompkins in Miami and nearby Aventura, the prosecution said.

In August and September 2020, Tompkins used these debit cards to withdraw funds at various ATMs in Miami-Dade County, according to prosecutors. They said the plan included about $ 300,000 in California’s unemployment insurance fund, of which about $ 230,000 was withdrawn.

Tompkins was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New England Patriots in 2013 and was also a member of the Oakland Raiders and the New York Jets.

Congress passed the Covid Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act last year to help individuals and businesses survive the COVID-19 pandemic economically. This includes providing federal funding for the state’s unemployment insurance benefit program.
