(NEXSTAR) – Former President Bill Clinton was hospitalized in Southern California for issues not related to COVID, spokesman Angel Urena said in a statement Thursday.

Clinton is working on an infectious disease, but according to Urena, he is “under treatment” and “healthy.”

He is currently being treated at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center.

Urena added that Clinton “is very grateful to the doctors, nurses and staff for providing him with excellent care.”

A spokesman for the 42nd President added the following joint statement from the medical center:

President Clinton was taken to the UC Irvine Medical Center and diagnosed with an infectious disease. He was admitted to the hospital for close monitoring and was given IV antibiotics and fluids. He remains in the hospital for continuous surveillance. After two days of treatment, his white blood cell count is on the decline and he responds well to antibiotics. The California-based medical team is in constant contact with the Newyork-based presidential medical team, including cardiologists. We want him to go home soon.
