Former Trump doctor Harold N. Bournestein dies at age 73

“He dictated the entire letter,” he told CNN. “I didn’t write the letter.”

Harold Nelson Bournestein was born on March 3, 1947 in New York City to Dr. Jacob and Mida (Selzer) Bournestein. From an early age he wanted to be a doctor like his father. According to the medical news website STAT, a photo of his office showed him as a smiling boy holding a stethoscope on what looks like a teddy bear. In high school, he played in a band called Doc Bornstein and the Interns.

Dr. Bournestein went to Tufts, a suburb of Boston, graduated in 1968 and earned a medical degree in 1975. He had a strong loyalty to the university that 19 members of his extended family attended for many years. He cut out a glamorous figure on campus, was an excellent student, albeit irreverent, and wrote poetry under his pseudonym Count Harold.

Dr. Bournestein eventually joined his father in a practice in Manhattan and was privileged at Lenox Hill Hospital, also on the Upper East Side. His father, at one point, lived in Jamaica, Queens, near Mr. Trump’s boyhood home, and it is believed that a patient with Jacob Bournestein introduced them. Elder Dr. Bournestein died in 2010 at the age of 93.

Dr. Bournestein was proud of the concierge care he had done with his father for over 50 years. “My greatest success was in an interview with Tufts University’s alumni magazine in 2017, saying,” Avoiding managed care medicine and conservative beards and haircuts that my parents thought were necessary for success. Dr. Bournestein was initially pleased with the attention he received as Mr. Trump’s doctor, but his infamy later exposed him and his family to harassment.

According to STAT’s report, his name was on the back of his business card, under which the phrases “dottore molto famoso” and “very famous doctor” were written in Italian.
