Colorado Springs — Fort Carson’s Maura Spence Carroll is the new Miss Colorado and became the first active military member to win the competition. She now moves to compete in Miss America.

The soldier exchanged her military boots for heels to get on stage, using her platform to spread an important message to the community. She spreads awareness among soldiers and veterans and pays attention to mental health.

Spencecarol participated in the Miss Colorado Tournament as Miss Fort Carson, competing with 11 other young women throughout the state.

“By ending stigma, more people get medical care, and as we get more medical care, we can later reduce suicide rates between both military and veterans,” Spence said. Carol told News 5 before the competition.

Her own mental health has learned more in the last few months since she was diagnosed with ADHD last October.

“It was like a light bulb moment, everything made sense and I was able to stop living shyly,” Spencecarol said. “We hope that being open and honest and allowing people to see not only hardships but also difficulties will pave the way for others to receive care.”

In her story, the spirit is important, so she wants to help end the stigma.

“If anyone else has the courage to speak, I fully recommend you to do so, and I’m standing right next to you,” Spencecarol said.

Besides being a soldier, Spencecarol said he practices singing every day. This is her talent during the competition. She also volunteers a lot, including speaking at school and practicing interview questions for the contest.

The Miss America Pageant will be held in December this year at Mohigan Sun Casino in Connecticut.

Native Texas are currently members of the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, and 4th Infantry Division as Intelligence Analysts.
