Inside Arizona College Prep High School in Chandler, nutrition staff are working hard to prepare to feed their students on the first day of school.
“I’m a little nervous but excited,” said Jenny Bracamonte, director of food and nutrition at the Chandler Unified School District. “We are excited to welcome our students.”
According to Bracamonte, the school, including the cafeteria, is brand new and welcomes high school students for the first time. But the days when there were few tray options are gone.
“It’s a kind of food court experience where they can make their own tacos and burritos. There is a weekly rotation station called the” test station “where they can sample new food. “She said.
This year isn’t new, but all students will get those meals again for free.
“You don’t have to pre-register. You just come to the cafeteria. All sites serve both breakfast and lunch.”
No matter which district of Arizona your child attends, you will have free daily meals during the 2021-202 school year. This is because USDA has expanded its federal program aimed at supporting families throughout the pandemic.
“This is one way to ensure that all students have access,” says Bracamonte. “We also really don’t know what the current economic situation is for everyone. That’s a big benefit to the family.”
Application is not required, but Bracamonte recommends Please fill in one anyway as your child may be eligible for additional benefits like a pandemic EBT, It gives the family additional funding for food.
“Similar to discounted test and sports fees,” she said. “So it’s still really advantageous to fill it out.”
Bracamonte also recommends checking with individual schools for breakfast times and menu options.
