Las Vegas (FOX5)-A local hospital thought it needed to help teens suffering from mental health from a pandemic and ongoing school challenges.
In April, the Southern Hills Hospital Pavilion began a teen talk. Free support group for teens aged 12-17. We currently offer two sessions every Thursday from 4 pm to 5 pm and from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
The goal is to get the support of peers and normalize the challenges they face on a daily basis. The session is facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker, Olivia Stalker.
Stalkers specialize in dealing with children and adolescents in the field of mental health. For the past seven years she has been involved in outpatient treatment.
She said in distance education that they felt the need to connect teens in a safe environment.
“I knew there was a lot to deal with when it came to distance learning and school stress, so it wasn’t just about school, but talking about issues like anxiety, depression, self-esteem and their image. We also thought about ourselves. “
Each session can accommodate 10 participants. According to Stalker, the capacity is usually reached every week.
“I was very grateful and honored that the teens enjoyed talking about it so much because there was one participant who came to see it in the Next Door app. “The stalker said.
According to Stalker, the beautiful part of teen talk is the group setting.
“These teens aren’t on the boat alone, they can hear from their peers, my thoughts and feelings are right, and someone else experiences the same. You can see what you are doing, “said the stalker.
Although teens are five years old, the stalkers said they provide empathy, advice and support to each other.
“I’m a group facilitator, but I don’t have to be that facilitator. The kids are sharing something, the kids are responding automatically,” Stalker said.
Some teens have continued to appear since their launch in April. She hopes this will gain more momentum and allow them to help more.
“It’s very humble as a social worker and I think it’s brave when they come every week,” Stalker said.
