Fresno, Calif. (KFSN)-Disturbing new details are emerging about a man who says police have deliberately caused a deadly house fire.

According to investigators, he was the uncle of two young children who died and the brother-in-law of a seriously injured mother.

Police say he set the fire “to kill everyone in the house.”

Fresno police have identified a man accused of deliberately launching a deadly house fire in the Midwestern Fresno on Tuesday as 29-year-old Philimon “Robert” Hartad.

The suspect lived at home with his brother, sister-in-law, niece, and nephew.

“In this case, there really isn’t a rhyme or reason for him to do something in such a terrifying way, he didn’t provide us with an explanation,” said Lieutenant Paul Cervantes of the Fresno Police Department.

Authorities say the suspect admitted to emergency medical personnel and firefighters about the fire. At that time, an officer was called.

Fresno police believe that the 32-year-old mother was awake at the time, and Hartad said he used gasoline to set off a fire.

“The mother came to the door and met her brother-in-law, Philimon” Robert “Hartad, and at some point she was set on fire and she left her residence,” said Lieutenant Cervantes.

She warned her neighbor to call 911 across the street, and the fire eventually reached the room where she and her two young children were staying.

A monument was set up outside the house on Wednesday for the suspect’s niece, 18-month-old Catalaya and nephew, and 5-month-old Calix.

The father of the children, the suspect’s brother, went to work before the fire began.

Investigators say Hartad has no criminal record and officers have never been called home before.

The detective is still trying to determine his motive and wants his 32-year-old mother to go through.

“I hope my mother can recover from this incident, but I can tell you that it will be a long process for her,” said Lieutenant Cervantes.

Officials say the suspect suffered considerable burns and is being treated in a hospital.

When he was released, he would be put in Fresno County Jail for two charges: attempted murder and arson-related crimes.
