He grew up in Fowler and said he values the deep ties between Mexican roots and the Central Valley.
“I wasn’t born here, so I was always wondering what my role was in this country,” said Dr. Jiménez-Sandoval.
Born and raised in Mexico until the age of nine, Dr. Saul Jiménez-Sandoval says he has found a way to embrace Latin roots while striving for a new heritage in the United States.
“I got hooked on literature because I saw the possibility of going back in history and seeing immigrants of all these generations coming in and coming here as the next link,” he said. I did.
He says working as a young child on his family’s farm taught him the power of diligence and the value of a united family. It also motivated much of his success.
Dr. Jiménez-Sandoval joined the state of Fresno as a faculty member in 2000 and became the ninth president of the university in May of this year. He loves to hear from students that his journey encouraged them to be unrestricted.
“I am very proud of my heritage and I am very proud of being able to empower regardless of the background of a multicultural student,” he said.
His wife, Dr. Mariana Anagnostopros, is also proud of her husband’s passion for providing opportunities to students. She says he can connect with them in a meaningful way.
“It’s very real when he says he wants people to succeed, achieve their potential, and open new avenues here at college,” she says.
At home, making traditional Mexican food is one way to maintain his culture and share it with his family, especially his two sons.
“I’ll come to the kitchen with you and teach you how to make it. One of their favorites is Chile Legeno. In fact, we’re making a pretty mean Chile Legeno,” said Dr. Jimenez Sandval. Says.
From cooking to education to teaching, Dr. Jiménez-Sandoval continues to drive the growth and success of those around him.
