Honolulu (KHON2) — On Tuesday, September 7, a rally was held in front of Honolulu Hale to save the hike stairs.
Plans to dismantle the hiking trail (commonly known as the stairs to heaven) will go in front of the full city council on Wednesday, September 8.
Those in favor of dismantling it said that the surrounding community had been plagued by trespassing, theft and violence for decades.
But trail proponents call it a precious treasure that must not destroy the stairs. They offered taxpayers controlled access at no cost.
“The startup costs are paid by the vendor, and daily running is covered by the fees hikers have to pay to climb the stairs. The stairs are a great windward treasure, about great history, stairs and the environment and valleys. Got a great cultural thing.
