Pueblo, Colorado — A spokeswoman for the Evraz Works created a smoke and steam eruption near downtown Pueblo on Saturday night in a so-called “energy release”. It happened after one of the furnaces in the factory ruptured.
According to a spokeswoman, the seven were slightly injured and treated on-site and taken to the hospital for follow-up. At the time of the incident, 28 people were working at the facility.
According to Evraz, the “electric arc furnace” ruptured, causing an “unexpected release” inside the furnace.
An electric arc furnace is a large machine commonly used in the steelmaking process. Uses high voltage to heat the material.
At the time of posting, the Pueblo Fire Department and the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office were inspecting the facility to ensure that the Evraz crew could safely return indoors.
As the PFD and PCSO wipe out the facility, Evraz’s crew investigates the cause of the incident.
