Atlanta (CBS46)-Georgia Parliamentarian Hank Johnson pressured FBI Director Christopher Ray for answers on Georgia’s domestic terrorism and hate crimes.
At a parliamentary hearing on Thursday, Congressman Johnson noticed a contradiction in how the government handled hate crimes.
At the hearing, Congressman Johnson told Secretary Ray, “And in March of this year, eight people were tragically killed in a mass shooting in Atlanta. The six killed were Asian women. At a press conference the next day, police officers were famously shot. Talked to the masses. It was a bad day“.”
“And Ray, two days after the murder, you said in an interview with NPR: Motivation is currently under investigation, but motivation does not appear to be racially motivated. As you said. In, do you guess to the media that you didn’t believe that the killing of six Asian women was a hate crime when the motivation was still under investigation? “
FBI Director Ray from Atlanta said his family was sad and the victims were heartbroken, saying his comments were “in line with the information at the time.”
Congressman Johnson then asked the FBI director for his thoughts on allowing people convicted of violent misdemeanors related to domestic terrorism to carry guns without restrictions.
Ray said he was not in a position to comment on any particular legislation, but shared the goal of preventing people who are prohibited by law from possessing guns from getting them. ..
