Columbia, South Carolina (WSPA) – Gaffney won the 5A State Championship on Saturday 22-19, overcoming a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit and defeating five-time defending champion Dutchfolk.
Quarterback Grayson Loftis sealed the Indian three-point victory in the second half of the fourth quarter, connecting with Suga Jeffreys in a 40-yard touchdown that won the game.
Dutch Fork took a 13-point lead behind two Davin Patterson touchdown runs and climbed 13-0. However, Loftis discovered that Jeffreys cut the Silver Fox lead to 13-7 with a 47-yard touchdown. This was a half-time score.
Dutch Fork re-scored a 42-yard touchdown pass from Patterson to Antonio Williams, expanding his lead to 19-7 in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter of the Gaffney rally, Tyler Smith made a four-yard touchdown at 11:20, followed by a go-ahead score from Loftis to Jeffreys with just over three minutes remaining. Indian defense continued on the rest of the road as Gaffney won the 18th state title and ended an undefeated streak of 62 games in the nationally ranked Silver Fox 62 games in the process.
Jeffreys finished at 153 yards with seven catches and two touchdowns. Loftis completed 23 of the 35 passes with 248 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 pass cuts. Smith hurried 107 yards to increase Gaffney’s pace. Gaffney defense was forced into two important interceptions.
