Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) — A local restaurant was a big hit after a garbage truck hit the front of the building.
Karuna’s typrate has been at the intersection of Grant and Campbell for the past 26 years. It’s a family business.
“I feel like I grew up in a restaurant since I was a kid who was carrying tables by bus after school and on weekends,” said Patrice Farrell, the owner’s daughter.
It is owned by Patrice’s mother, Karna. Karna moved from Thailand to the United States as a teenager and built a restaurant from scratch.
“My mother is always there, it’s like an extension of her house,” Farrell said. “If we had a birthday party and she wanted to be there, she had to take her with her. She came out of the kitchen and sang Happy Birthday.”
Karuna’s closed for the first time in a few years. That’s because on Thursday-when Patrice leaves the parking lot, the garbage truck says it’s turning too steeply. The truck hit the sunshade in front of the restaurant and destroyed most of the entrance.
“The windows broke, one of the tables collapsed, and there were bricks and dust everywhere,” Farrell said.
The restaurant has to do business as the front of the building has been rebuilt. The family believes it will take at least a month before they can resume. The landlord says he is working with the city to fix it as soon as possible.
“We know that this community has emerged for us, so I think we’re okay to get over this,” Farrell said.
