Gavin MacLeod, captain of The Love Boat, dies at age 90 – Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky

Los Angeles (AP) — TV actor Gavin MacLeod of “The Love Boat” and “Mary Tyler Moore Show” has died. He was 90 years old.

MacLeod died early Saturday morning, his nephew Mark Sea told Variety. MacLeod’s health was poor recently, but the cause of death was unknown, industry newspapers reported.

MacLeod won the stardom as a cynical TV news writer and Murray Slaughter in the 1970s comedy Mary Tyler Moore Show.

He became the protagonist and gained greater fame as the hilarious captain stub of “Love Boat”. Early in his career, he was featured in “McHale’s Navy” from 1962 to 1964 as sailor Joseph “Happy” Haynes.

His movie credits include “Kelly’s Heroes,” “Gunboat San Pablos,” “Sword of Ali Baba,” “War Hunt,” and “Crime Busters.” His recent television credits include “Touched By An Angel,” “JAG,” and “The King of Queens.”
