Chinese internet giant Baidu said it has agreed with local car maker Zhejiang Geely Holding to establish a strategic partnership to develop and produce smart electric vehicles (EVs).
The two companies will establish a new vehicle manufacturing joint venture with Geely to provide expertise in automobile design and manufacturing, and Baidu will contribute to advanced driving technology.
In a statement, Baidu co-founder and CEO Robin Li said, “We have long believed in the future of intelligent driving. Geely is one of the leading passenger car manufacturers in China, with sales of Geely and Lync & Co brand vehicles in 2020 down only 3% to 1.32 million units.
The company also holds a majority stake in Volvo Cars and just under half of the stake in Malaysia’s state-owned automaker Proton Holdings.
