Chinese internet giant Baidu said it has agreed with local car maker Zhejiang Geely Holding to establish a strategic partnership to develop and produce smart electric vehicles (EVs).

The two companies will establish a new vehicle manufacturing joint venture with Geely to provide expertise in automobile design and manufacturing, and Baidu will contribute to advanced driving technology.

In a statement, Baidu co-founder and CEO Robin Li said, “We have long believed in the future of intelligent driving. The company also holds a majority stake in Volvo Cars and just under half of the stake in Malaysia’s state-owned automaker Proton Holdings.
