Georgetown, Kentucky (LEX 18) — Georgetown College athletes are outraged after suddenly announcing that schools will cut down on some sports programs to save money.

Coaches and players said they didn’t know they had a problem with their program. Currently, admins are not responding to concerns.

On Thursday, the school officially announced in a Facebook post that it no longer funded men’s and women’s golf and soccer or archery team competitions to quote “saving organizational costs.” did.

“Lost first grade with COVID was one of the things you knew that you could accept it over time. It affected everyone.

He said the manager had him and his teammates wait for a zoom call for more than 20 minutes before the coach decided to tell the bad news.

“He said,’To be honest with you, I’m just going. Our program has been cut,'” Damron said.

Connor Taylor, who coached both men’s and women’s golf, said neither team was informed that they had financial problems.

“We didn’t exceed our budget, and we’re actually a pretty self-reliant program. We’ll soon host two major tournaments that will pay 25 percent of our own budget.” Taylor said.

According to Taylor, managers never said they were considering reducing the program, and could have been able to raise the rest of the money with more notice.

The online petition for storing the program has already received over 1,000 signatures.

Damron and Taylor said public protests wanted to convince managers to change their minds.

“I think we can correct all the mistakes and have the potential to return the golf program,” Taylor said.

The school said all scholarships will continue to be respected for new students and current players.

LEX 18 contacted the school for further comments, but did not respond.
