Atlanta, Georgia (CW69 News at 10) — At a press conference on December 8, 2020, Governor Brian Kemp and state health officials will soon receive hundreds of thousands of COVID-19 vaccines in Georgia. ..

“The number of vaccines distributed in Georgia within 10 days of next week is limited,” Kemp said.

This is part of the Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed and is the impetus for the public release of the COVID-19 vaccine. “Vaccines are provided free of charge to recipients,” said Dr. Vik Kapil, Chief Health Officer of the Georgia Public Health Service.

“There are two different vaccines that we want to be approved,” said GDPH Commissioner Dr. Kathleen Toomey. These two vaccines are Pfizer and Moderna. Dr. Toomey states that both require two separate doses every 2-3 weeks and can cause flu-like side effects. “That’s what you expect. It’s not a complication,” she said.

Authorities say it will be distributed first to healthcare providers and long-term care facilities, and then to key workers and the elderly. “The general public cannot be vaccinated for months,” Kemp said.

As the number of COVID-19 cases continues to grow, some are worried about vaccination. Both Kemp and Toomey say they intend to take it themselves. “This vaccine is safe and effective, and we need to reassure everyone that there is good science behind it,” says Toomey. She says the pandemic is especially important to the African-American community, which is affecting people disproportionately.

Authorities urge everyone to continue to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines throughout the process. “Wear a mask. Wash your hands. Practice to reduce social distance,” Kemp said.

Health officials are also encouraging people to be vaccinated against the flu.
