Harrison approached the driver in the parking lot of the Circle K convenience store opposite the police station after witnessing a traffic violation on Friday afternoon, officials said.

The driver refused to reveal his identity, and the interaction escalated when the man pushed Harrison. Harrison used a taser to arrest the man and take him to jail, officials said.

“The ambush attack on Police Officer Harrison is believed to have been a retaliation for the incident and the arrest of the man,” the agency said in a statement on Sunday evening. They did not identify the man.

At a press conference on Sunday, Alamo Police Chief Karen Zanders said, “I have never experienced the sadness I felt since the life of Officer Dylan Harrison was taken in our small quiet town.” Said.

Ferguson was detained Sunday afternoon at Alamo’s home in Wheeler County, about 90 miles (145 km) southeast of Macon. The State SWAT team and a division of the US Marshals Service arrested him without incident after a major investigation.

He was also charged with exacerbating stalking in connection with a previous domestic case and was detained in Lawrence County Jail, officials said.

It wasn’t immediately clear on Sunday if he had a lawyer to speak for him.

Harrison is survived by his wife and their 6-month-old son.
