Gig workers rally in Fresno in support of Right to Organize Act – Fresno, California

Fresno, California 2021-07-23 16:21:56 –

Fresno, CA (KFSN)-A rally in support of the currently stagnant organizing rights law in the state legislature was held throughout California earlier this week.

One of the demonstrations took place Wednesday afternoon at the Town Hall in downtown Fresno.

A nationwide strike is underway between rideshare and delivery drivers such as DoorDash and UberEats.

The organizers said they are seeking the right to organize and form unions for more benefit.

Proposal 22 Passed last November, ride-sharing drivers and other gig workers have become independent contractors.

But rally participants said it wasn’t exactly how it worked.

Volunteer organizer Hassid Kasama said, “Independent contractors are not treated like second-class workers. Without the right to negotiate terms and conditions, they are not independent contractors.”

A spokesman for the Protect App-based Drivers and Services Coalition said Uber Driver revenues have increased in California’s two largest markets since Proposal 22 was passed.
