Oklahoma City (KFOR) – If you were shopping for groceries at Uptown Grocery on Saturday morning, you might have seen a young girl in a green vest selling Girl Scout cookies.

This year, they are becoming creative not only with contactless payments, but also with contactless cookies.

“It took about a day to make it,” said Girl Scout Sophie Becanan.

Girl Scouts throughout Oklahoma are creating contactless cookie gimmicks. Some look like a seesaw, others look like a carousel.

“You can put a card or cash here and turn it over,” said Girl Scout Adi, who helped create the carousel cookie gimmick.

“We made it out of dowel sticks, PVC pipes … We also took some wooden circles and used a drill. My friend Libby used a power tool to do it. I loved making it, “said Girl Scout Sydney.

Girls are using STEM learning and entrepreneurship to come up with new and innovative ways to sell cookies safely.

“The sale of Girl Scout cookies is something they look forward to every year. Something they are planning. Something they are very excited about and it gives them a normal feeling,” Girl said. Shannon Evers, CEO of Scout Western Oklahoma, said.

After having to shorten the cookie season in 2020, Girl Scouts are back in it. Sell cookies to anyone who wants to get a box of Samoa or Tagalon.

But this year already poses a challenge.

“It was very difficult to get out and door-to-door to hang a door hanger, especially in a snowstorm. Instead of knocking on people’s doors, that’s what we’re doing this year,” Sydney said. Said.

“Our sales are down about 50% from where we normally are, which is devastating,” says Evers.

Still, these Girl Scouts put everything they have into their sales.

“My goal is 1,500. The prize money of 1,500 is a cool GoPro camera,” says Buchanan.

“Children are incredibly resilient and our girls are no exception,” Evers said.

The Girl Scout cookie season usually runs from early February to the end of March and lasts eight weeks.
