Deb Shah, 14, from Florida, won the 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Merriam-Webster said his winning word was “psammophile,” a noun used to describe animals and plants that prefer to live in sandy soil environments.

Eighth grade Shah from Largo, in the Tampa Bay area, also won a $50,000 prize for correctly spelling “poliorcetics,” “aegagrus,” and “schitorrhachis.”

This year’s bee was the Shah’s third and final entry, according to the report. Shah had previously competed in 2019 and 2021, according to the Associated Press. Bees began in 1925 and is open to students through eighth grade.
