Columbia, South Carolina (AP) – The Governor of South Carolina has signed a bill that will allow college athletes in the state to make money and other benefits from their names and images.
A law signed on Thursday allows athletes to be paid by external organizations for autograph sessions, guest appearances, sponsorships, or other events that use names, images, or portraits. This proposal does not allow athletes to pay for play directly and cannot use school logos, uniforms or facilities.
This law will not come into effect until May 2022 to give the NCAA time to develop a nationally unified policy.
