Governor Gavin Newsom was in Merced County on Wednesday. Rumors spread rapidly that the first known US case of the Omicron variant was detected in California.

“This was predicted,” he said. “It’s not surprising that California has a sequence, a test protocol, and a state test lab.”

State officials confirmed that the person returned from South Africa to San Francisco a few days before Thanksgiving and was a fully vaccinated traveler recovering from mild symptoms.

“Evidence that the Omicron individuals identified by sequencing actually show mild symptoms is improving as evidence of the importance of vaccination.”

The San Joaquin Valley is one of the lowest immunization rates in the state, and hospitals are constantly running over capacity.

On Wednesday, the governor promoted vaccines and boosters ahead of a potential winter surge.

“The longer we live with this virus, the more mutations we have to face,” he said.

At Frank Sparks Elementary School, Brandon Karin and his daughter Cassidy decide to stop by a vaccine clinic on campus.

“We decided to vaccinate the booster and her,” he said. “At this point in the pandemic, there is no excuse for doing what we can for the community.”

Felysha Leglu has a 7-year-old daughter who is still in the fence.

“We just want to see how it progresses and how people react,” she said. “Even if we have young children in our family, we may feel a little more comfortable. I’m not against it.”

Authorities believe that Omicron variants are highly contagious, but say there are still many unknowns.

“There is more panic than information about this new variant, which means we have to keep our hearts open, but stay vigilant.”
