Oklahoma City (KFOR) – Famous cowboy poet Joe Russell was named the poet laureate of Oklahoma between 2021 and 2022.
Governor Kevin Stitt announced Thursday that Kreger was the choice of his poet laureate.
“I’m honored to have Joe Russell Kregger appointed as a poet laureate in Oklahoma from 2021 to 2022,” Stitt said. “Joe’s journey to creative writing shows that it’s never too late for a new venture. Former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating appointed Kruger as Oklahoma’s poet laureate in 1997, according to a news release from Stitt’s office.
According to Amber Sharples, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Arts Council, Kruger’s poetry evokes the spirit of Oklahoma.

Kruger was born in Tonkawa and was introduced to poetry by his father at an early age. According to a news release, he graduated from Northern Oklahoma College and Oklahoma State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science, after which he became a full-time rancher and entrepreneur.
He picked up a 56-year-old pen and wrote poetry to express his life experience.
A self-proclaimed “cowboy poet,” Kruger has published two books on poetry, “Lookin’at Life” and “Still Lookin,” and several audio albums of his poetry. His work set a sales record for cowboy poets of his time.
He has read and presented over 150 poems in schools, churches and agricultural organizations throughout the region.
The tradition of the Oklahoma poet laureate dates back to 1923.
“The Governor of Oklahoma’s appointment of a poet laureate in Oklahoma was codified into state law in 1994. The law requires an appointment every two years,” the news release said.
Joy Harjo, who lives in Tulsa, is the current American poet laureate.
