Clemson, South Carolina (WSPA)-Governor McMaster was on the Clemson campus on Friday after the university called for action for college students with special needs.
Clemson University has one of South Carolina’s most prominent special needs programs.
The ClemsonLIFE program was launched for students with special needs who may not have many choices at the university. This opportunity allows them to come to Clemson to learn, grow and master life skills.
Currently, this program is being extended throughout the state.
McIveer Thomas started searching for colleges with many questions.
“Are there any colleges that need special help,” said Thomas.
As a student with intellectual challenges, his options were limited, when he found Clemson Life.
“When I opened the letter, I was just surprised, I was shocked that they accepted me,” said Thomas.
Thomas graduated a few years ago and his story is one of the overcoming.
Thomas said: The road is still stepped, but it’s better than it was years ago. “
Thomas’s success story is not the first.
Hundreds of other students with special needs went through a two-year program and were able to get a full-time job.
Governor McMaster announced on Friday that other universities would allocate additional funding to the state budget to launch their own similar programs.
“Keep doing what you’re doing. South Carolina has become an even better place to live, work, and raise a family,” McMaster said.
For Clemson’s president, Jim Clements, it’s a hit near the house.
His daughter Grace is a freshman in this year’s Clemson Life Program.
“I don’t know if she would go to college and have this kind of experience, have these friends and have this program, and learn the skills, how to live independently, how to get a job. I’m the president of the university, but as the father of Clemson LIFE, I’m excited. We’re very fortunate, “says Clements.
This additional funding will also be provided to schools with existing special needs programs to continue to enhance student opportunities.
The ClemsonLIFE program graduates an average of 7-8 students each year and doubled that number last year.
