Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) — Graffiti has landed in washrooms around local businesses, neighborhoods, and towns, and it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to clean everything.

Tucson police are working to reduce the damage that is also hitting your pocket.

Sergeant Faith Schrouder of the TPD’s Neighborhood Crime Division explained in 2012 that the city would cost about $ 1 million.

“These numbers have dropped significantly, and from 2015 to the present, they are now in the range of over 400,000,” explained Sergeant Faith Schrouder.

The city of Tucson explained that graffiti has been a problem for years and the number of graffiti cleanups is increasing.

In 2019, more than 3,542 vandalisms were reported to the city, and in 2020 nearly 5,180 were cleaned up.

City officials explain that the reason cannot be determined.

“But I didn’t know if it was because there were more, or because people were reporting,” said Christina Polsgrove, Tucson’s Environmental and General Services. “But it’s hard to do.”

Tucson police said the greatest deterrent to this crime was to get rid of vandalism quickly, where community support could be obtained.

“Because they are there, we are always grateful to receive reports from the inhabitants. We do everything that keeps them busy and drive on foot,” Polsgrove said.

Residents can report Destruction by city app..

“When people submit a graffiti report via the app, they can take a picture and it becomes part of the record,” Polsgrove said.

The city will sign a contract with a local company to wipe out the damage after it has been reported.

The TPD explained that several reports have helped the city regain some of the money it spends on purification.

“Since 2015, we have been convicted of more than 30 felony vandalism due to felony criminal damage, which allows us to get the city back for the thousands of dollars returned to the city.” Sgt. Shrouder.
