Conway, South Carolina (WBTW) – Hospitals in South Carolina are trying to meet the demand for the COVID-19 vaccine as all seniors over the age of 70 are eligible to be vaccinated.

Elderly people trying to get the vaccine on Wednesday were rushing to book at the Conway Medical Center (CMC). The CMC states that it has booked as many shots as possible with a few hours of booking.

The hospital says it has received thousands of requests from older people who want the vaccine.

“There seems to be a lot of demand there,” said CMC spokesman Allyson Floyd. “We requested an additional supply of vaccine, so we made the dose available. What we get is what we can give.”

CMC says healthcare professionals are trying to balance vaccination as much as possible while they continue to fight the virus surge.

“At the same time, we are dealing with near-record COVID levels for both inpatients and community positives,” Floyd said. “They are trying to handle both sides of this.”

According to the South Carolina Hospital Association, it can take several weeks after you make an appointment to actually take it.

The CMC says it will book more vaccinations as soon as it knows how many vaccinations it will receive from the State Department of Health and Environment (DHEC).

“We seek the patience of people as we move forward. They understand that this is a big task to enable us to provide it in both efficient and safe ways. Because of that, “Floyd said.

Meanwhile, at Myrtle Beach, Mayor Brenda Bethoon says he is talking to health care providers about hosting a major vaccine event in the city, probably at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

“We are exploring those options,” said Mayor Bethoon. “We want to be partners in the health community and help them get vaccinated faster if possible.”

Elderly people are the final group in Phase 1a of state vaccine deployment. The next step is for many front-line key workers.

DHEC expects Phase 1b to begin later this winter.
