Las Vegas (KLAS) — Blood is very much needed during this time. When you take the number of your usual holiday travel incidents and accidents and add COVID-19 to your mix, it doesn’t take long for you to run out of supplies you need.
“For the holiday season, all types of blood donations are reduced by about 25% during the holiday season, so we need to donate all types of blood now,” explains Brittany McCremore, Vitalant Communications Manager.
The current greatest need is convalescent plasma from people who have recovered 100% from COVID to help other patients. Blood group O negative is another big need.
When it comes to donations, blood, platelets, and plasma can help. When you donate blood, you are probably donating whole blood. It takes about an hour and is most often used to help patients with trauma or surgery.
Platelets are small cells in the blood that form blood clots. When you donate these, a special machine will collect them and return most of your red blood cells and plasma to you. These are essential for cancer treatment and organ transplantation.
Donating plasma can help stop bleeding in emergencies and traumatic situations. Plasma is collected through an automated process that separates plasma from other blood components and returns blood cells and platelets.
All three types of donations are especially needed during this time.
