(NEXSTAR) – The pandemic has clearly looped the world economy. Some have been expelled from work due to a furlough, while others have abandoned their will. Many are called “great resignations.”
Gallup research From the beginning of this year, we found that 48% of the American workforce is actively thinking about changing jobs.
What motivates people to call it quit? According to Gallup’s global managing partner Jon Clifton, the problem isn’t really salary or COVID-19 fallout. In a conversation with Axios on Thursday, Gallup’s data showed that the real problem was employee turnover, Clifton said.
The three most common reasons why Gallup found employees free at work are:
- I don’t see any development opportunities
- I don’t feel connected to the purpose of the company
- I don’t have a strong relationship at work
Research shows that companies and managers need to ensure these three things when trying to increase employee retention.
The majority of American workers surveyed (64%) reported that they did not feel they were engaged in the job. That said, according to Clifton, the proportion of workers engaged is increasing over time. “One reason is that our business strategy is changing,” he said. Companies don’t just promote people to managerial positions because they are good at work. Rather, they see management as a skill in their own right, ensuring that people can manage others well before making more direct reports. According to Clifton, a good manager means more employee engagement and lower turnover.
Employees engaged in work are much less likely to retire. Gallup realized that he needed to offer a 20% salary increase to consider leaving.
