Greenville, South Carolina (WSPA) – School leaders in Greenville County held a special meeting on Tuesday afternoon to discuss ways to help employees affected by the pandemic.

“There was no guidance for COVID-19,” said Tim Waller, Media Relations Director at Greenville County School.

School district people said no one had seen the virus coming in or its impact on the school or the people working there.

That’s why schools in Greenville County wanted to do something for the affected people. So on Tuesday, they voted a one-time bonus for employees in all school districts.

“Now it’s easy to beat people, mostly teachers, on all the problems of the world,” Waller said. “Dr. Royster sees this as a way to boost morale and let everyone know that he is valued and valued.”

According to the school district, full-time office workers such as teachers and managers will receive $ 1,000.

“This is a perception of teachers who are going beyond the top, who must come up with innovative ways and ways to teach young people during a pandemic,” Waller said.

Waller told Seven News that their teachers did a great job of being flexible and adapting to new conditions, working harder and longer.

“Teachers have become more creative and have come up with lessons that no one could have imagined in a traditional classroom environment,” he said.

The district says that full-time hourly employees receive $ 500 and part-time workers receive a partial bonus.

“It’s frustrating. It’s sometimes annoying for people to do professionally trained during COVID-19, but it keeps faith,” Waller said. “Hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

The board also voted for a coronavirus leave extension that would allow employees who had to be quarantined for the virus up to 80 hours of special leave.

“COVID wasn’t originally covered as sick leave, especially when talking about long-term illnesses and conditions that keep people out of school,” Waller said.

The district said that the money for vacations would come from the CARES law and the money for bonuses would come from unused funds.

“Given that the school will be closed in March 2020, we’ve saved electricity and other transportation costs,” Waller said. “There was a lot of budget we didn’t spend because the school was closed.”

Waller told 7 News that this is their way of recognizing the additional obligations employees have taken since the pandemic began.

“Your efforts have not been overlooked,” he said. “They are attracting attention not only from students and parents, but also from all school managers here in Greenville County. Well done. Keep up the good work, and hopefully you get this bonus Can be used successfully. “

District officials said the bonus would be distributed in February.

According to the school district, the new COVID vacation extension will apply to everyone quarantined between January 1st and August of this year.
