A replacement for Grist Mill Bridge, which supplies composite beams from AIT Bridges, a division of Advanced Infrastructure Technologies (AIT), a designer and supplier of composite bridge systems and structural components, has opened. The bridge on Route 1A in Hampden, Maine was opened after the required load tests.

The former span was built in 1950 and consisted of three bridges stacked together. It has been replaced by a new span consisting of five composite beams manufactured at the Brewer facility in AIT Bridge, Maine. This technology was developed in collaboration with the Advanced Structures and Composites Center at the University of Maine.

The Gristmill Bridge spans the Sadabscock Stream, an environmentally sensitive tributary of the Penobscot River. The replacement of this bridge is part of a project that includes the reconstruction and paving work of Route 1A, which is nearly two miles long. The total cost of the project is about $ 8.9 million.

AIT Bridges’ composite bridge system is designed to last at least 30 years longer than the average steel bridge and more than 100 years. In addition, the bridge system uses composites instead of steel, requiring little maintenance throughout its life cycle. The use of sustainable, environmentally friendly (low carbon footprint) materials provides a low-impact solution to aging bridges in the United States.

“We are very pleased to have lent our engineering expertise to replace the Gristmill Bridge in Hampden,” Kensweeney, president and chief engineer of AIT Bridge, said in a press release. “We wanted to ensure that the construction done in 2020 was long-lasting and resilient. By using materials made in Maine by Maine artisans, this bridge is timely. Can withstand the challenges of. “

AIT Bridges offers composite arch bridge systems and composite beams. Two building blocks that can replace most bridges across the country.
