Group of parents wants standardized testing put on hold this year due to pandemic – Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Oklahoma City (KFOR) – A group of parents wants to withhold standardized tests throughout the state this year for a pandemic.

“In a normal year, standardized tests show what a student holds on a particular day,” Oklahoma’s parent, Leslieborn Blake, told KFOR.

But Bournebreak said she and her other parents feel the situation is a little different this year.

“There are many social factors that contribute to standardized test results, such as poverty, chaotic family life, and current illness,” Bournebreak said. “It was illustrated ten times as we all (students, parents, teachers) experienced a lot of trauma this year during this pandemic.”

She is part of a group of state-wide parents trying to opt out of compulsory state testing for a pandemic, through a form quoting state law, Title 25, talking about parental rights.

“So you fill out and fill out three copies of this form. Send one to the teacher, one to the principal and the other to the school administrator,” Bonebreak said.

Bonebreak posted the form on Facebook, and other parents started commenting.

“The overwhelming majority of students are not ready for the test this year,” wrote one parent.

Another parent wrote, “Opting out of the state test this year could reduce the pressure on teachers and students in one of the most difficult teacher years to remember.” ..

At a press conference on Tuesday, KFOR asked Secretary of Education Ryan Walters if he would consider putting a standardized test for the 2021 academic year on hold.

“The end-of-semester test will be very important. We need to know where our students are. It doesn’t punish the school, but we know where our children are. I was able to do it, “Walters said. “We need to know how well our students are learning where they are in relation to other states. We need that data. That data is essential to see where our students are. I think.”

“If our state leaders don’t take the lead to stop the standardized test this year, as parents, we need to create a wave for it to happen,” says Bournebreak. I did.
