“BABS” is a group of Tucson female minority skateboarders trying to change the face of sports.

The girls sat down at KGUN9 and shared their views on skateboarding and their hopes for the future.

Skateboarding is a traditional male-dominated sport that these women are trying to change.

BABS was started in 2017 by Yasmynn Lopez, also known as “Y-Lo” and a few friends. Currently, the group has up to 15 members. As for the BABS acronym, they say it can represent what you like.

Groups meet weekly at Santa Rita Park and other skate spots throughout the city.

This group is inclusive and welcomes people from all disciplines. They have weekend barbecues and hangouts to practice their movements.

according to Skating border headquartersAbout 23% of skaters are women, which is the number these women are trying to change.

Yasmynn says the need for skateboarding diversity is important. There are other groups across the country doing the same.

After all, they just want the girls in Tucson to try and never give up on their goals or dreams no matter what.
