Group protests the removal of Lexington trees by KU – Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky

Lexington, Kentucky (LEX 18) — The last ditch effort to prevent Kentucky Utilities from cutting down trees in the Lansdowne area ended in arrest.

Protesters are protesting because the first tree fell from 9am on Monday.

Police arrested a woman who refused to leave under the tree. When she was arrested, the crew began cutting down a tree while neighbors watched from the sidewalk.

A woman told LEX18 that she didn’t understand why such a small tree threatened the power lines above it.

Other protesters have told LEX18 that they want more compromises and more communication with utilities.

A KU spokesman said the company understands why neighbors are upset, but removing these trees is important to protect the safety and reliability of the system.
