Growing Arizona wildfires prompts new evacuation orders – Tucson, Arizona

Superior, Arizona (AP) — Two wildfires fueled by dry weather are spreading in south-central Arizona, forcing them to evacuate.

Authorities said late Monday that so-called telegraph fires have now expanded to more than 96 square miles and containment is zero. Evacuation has been ordered and two schools have been opened as shelters. Meanwhile, Mezcal Fire, about 12 miles southeast of Globe, has expanded to more than 83 square miles.

Thousands of buildings have been threatened, but hundreds of firefighters have prevented damage so far and no injuries have been reported. Officials say that forecasts of low humidity and strong winds throughout the week are likely to accelerate the spread of the infection.
