Anderson County, South Carolina (WSPA) – Berton police said on Sunday that several guns and drug-related equipment were confiscated after cross-country pursuits.
The incident began around 1 pm on Sunday when police officers attempted to pull a vehicle suspected of being stolen, according to a statement from Belton police. Belton police chief J. Rossrichie said the driver of the vehicle in question had escaped, chasing multiple counties and leading police officers. According to Ritchie, the driver stopped tracking when he was over 80 mph and police approached busy traffic.
During the chase, a female passenger tried to get out of the car while it was driving slowly, putting her hand out the window and raising it up, Ritchie said. Officers were uncertain whether it was a kidnapping.
“Some time later, we were informed that a vehicle had crashed at 500 blocks on Rogers Road near Highway 8,” Ritchie said after the chase was completed. Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, Berton Police Station, South Carolina Highway Patrol, and paramedics responded to the scene.
Police then identified the suspect as 26-year-old Jonathan Josie Carter. He had 32 grams of methamphetamine, some marijuana and two pistols. Carter was banned from carrying firearms, especially because of the history of alleged possession, Ritchie said.
Carter faces multiple accusations, including “carrying firearms during violent crimes, smuggling methamphetamine, failing to stop due to green lights, and other traffic violations.”
The two passengers in the car were not charged.
Carter was admitted to a nearby hospital with a life-threatening injury.
