The fashion supply chain extends from textile production to retail channels. However, the most harmful environmental impact occurs during the manufacturing process. This process consumes a lot of resources that use a lot of water and chemicals. In addition, an estimated 10-15% of the total fabric used to produce garments is now waste already at the cutting stage. Today, most of them are eventually landfilled or burned.
The Hong Kong Textile Apparel Institute (HKRITA) and the Swedish H & M Foundation have launched an ambitious project to tackle textile waste in Cambodia. Led by Green Machine, the world’s first technology for large-scale recycling of blended textiles, we will contribute to a better future for the people of Cambodia and the planet.
Cyclic practice is key to creating a more sustainable fashion future. Therefore, through the FABRIC project, GIZ has brought together all the major partners along the clothing supply chain to evaluate the industrial scale development of Cambodia’s green machines.
Developed by HKRITA with the support of the H & M Foundation, Green Machine is the world’s first technology that allows large-scale separation and recycling of polyester and cotton blended fibers without compromising quality. Recycling of a single material has long been possible, but recycling of blends and blending of the world’s most common types of textiles, cotton and polyester, has not been possible. GreenMachine has changed the game. This process uses only heat, water, and less than 15% biodegradable chemicals to separate cotton and polyester materials in a closed loop system.
