Weinstein appeared in the first court on Wednesday morning, the day after he was handed over from New York. According to the LA District Attorney’s Office, he was acquitted of four cases of rape and forced oral mating, two cases of sexual assault by detention, and one case of sexual insertion through the use of force.
“Anyone who abuses power and influence to prey on others will be brought to justice,” district attorney George Gascon said in a statement.
According to a news release, Weinstein was charged with raping a woman at a hotel between September 2004 and September 2005. He has also been accused of raping another woman on two separate occasions at a hotel in Beverly Hills in November 2009 and November 2010.
The accusations also included the sexual assault of another woman at the Beverly Hills Hotel in May 2010, and the sexual assault of two women in separate cases in 2013.
The grand jury returned the indictment on March 15. The former Hollywood producer will return to court on July 29th.
The case is being investigated by DA offices, police stations in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.
New York prison officials handed over Weinstein on Tuesday for additional sexual assault charges and ended his protracted battle to delay his delivery.
Waynestein, 69, was released by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision at around 9:25 am, the ministry’s statement said.
His spokesman, Judas Engelmayer, said Weinstein’s lawyer was still trying to negotiate a delivery exemption.
“We will fight so that Harvey can get the medical care he needs and, of course, he can be treated fairly,” Engelmeier said. “Due process, presumption of innocence, and fair trial are all his rights.”
