Honolulu (KHON2)-A new report from the Hawaii Department of Health suggests that the delta variant of coronavirus is the most prevalent strain of virus in the state. The data is based on a tested sample that authorities estimate to account for 80% of COVID-19 cases on the island.
Lab tests have also shown that at least 25 cases are classified as “DeltaPlus” variants, which are mutations in the existing Delta strain. As of August 4, 16 cases of “Delta Plus” were detected in Maui County, 8 cases in Honolulu County, and 1 case in Hawaii County. Researchers continue to monitor whether “Delta Plus” is more contagious than Delta, but DOH says more data is needed to confirm this.
