Honolulu (KHON2) — Hawaii Island police have charged Puna’s 30-year-old Jason Benkoski with a felony on suspicion that Benkoski attacked his father in a machete on Wednesday, May 26.
Police responded after being informed that an incident had occurred in Pahoa’s business at 4:35 pm on Wednesday.
Police arrived at the scene and found a 62-year-old man with multiple lacerations on his arms, hands, and head. The injured man identified his son Benkoski as an assailant and reported to police that he was at home in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision.
Police responded to Paradise Park’s residence and successfully arrested Benkoski on Wednesday. Benkoski was detained in a police cell while the detective continued his investigation.
Benkoski was charged with first- and second-class assaults on Thursday, May 27, after the detective consulted with the prosecutor.
His bail is set at $ 35,000 and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday, May 28.
According to Hawaii Island police, Benkoski’s father was reportedly taken to the Hilo Medical Center for an injury that was considered “serious.”
