Hawaii is tied to the top of the Big West Women’s Volleyball standings after tonight’s Karpol sweep. Wahine defeated Mustang 25-19, 25-19, 25-22 at the Stan Sheriff Center’s Simprimi Arena.
UH is 7-0 at Big West and 10-5 overall. CalPoly fell to 6-2 and 8-11.
Wahine, who won the tournament 18 times in a row in 2019, has the first league relationship with the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Amber Igiede wrote 13 kills, 6 blocks, 7 digs and a service ace on the Hawaii statistics sheet. Igiede’s last kill was due to match points and was originally called a net breach against UH before the Challenge Review reversed the call.
Karpol is the last big west team to defeat Hawaii in a sweep on October 11, 2019. (Because of the pandemic, there was no season in 2020.)
All three sets tonight were approaching in most ways.
The Mustang stayed close to the entire first set until UH scored the final three points with two kills by Skyler Williams and a double contact error by the Mustang. Brooke Van Sickle and Igiede each scored 5 kills in the set.
Cal Poly took the first lead in the second set of 9-8 with Peyton Dueck’s ace. Wahine regained the lead 13-12 with Igiede’s kill. This is part of a 6-1 sequence that also includes three blocks by Igiede, ending with UH at 16-12.
Tommi Stockham led the Mustang with 10 kills. Van Sickle added 10 to Wahine and made 10 excavations.
Wahine will host California State University, Bakersfield on Saturday.
