Honolulu (KHON2) —The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) announced that Hawaii is under tsunami surveillance after a magnitude 8.1 earthquake struck Alaska on Wednesday, July 28.

According to PTWC officials, the quake occurred off the Alaska Peninsula at around 8:16 pm Hawaii Standard Time.

PTWC officials said the earthquake could have caused the tsunami, and investigations are underway to determine if Hawaii is threatened by the tsunami.

According to PTWC officials, the earliest estimate of the arrival of the first tsunami in Hawaii is 12:53 am on Thursday, July 29, if the tsunami affected the island.

According to the PTWC, endangered coastal residents are advised to pay attention to the information and follow the instructions from the national and local governments.
